I am reviewing Bokuryo (King Tea’s House brand) Jin Guan Yin, Xiao Zhong, Hong Cha (Black Tea), Wu Yi Mountain.

Let’s break all these details down so we understand what we are reviewing:

Jin Guan Yin is the type of tea. Jin Guan Yin is a cultivar made by crossing Tie Guan Yin tea trees with Huang Jin tea trees. Both Tie Guan and Huang Jin are traditionally grown in Anxi county in Fujian province. However, this cultivar has been transplanted to the high mountains of Wu Yi (thus the designation “Wu Yi Mountain Black tea”).

Xiao Zhong is a processing method of lightly smoking the leaves in order to bring out their depth and minerality. This method stands in contrast to a deep smoking often associated with Lapsang Souchong. As such, this tea is not going to be smokey at all. Rather, its processing is going to bring the flavor of the leaf into full view. Finally, it is processed as a Hong Cha (black tea)

    Now to my review:

Steeping: I used a Gaiwan , 200° water. After a quick rinse, I steeped the tea for 15 seconds adding 10 seconds for each additional steeping (increasing the time incrementally for later steeps as the tea became weaker).

Smell: the tea after the initial rinse has a nice sweet malty smell. However, after your first smell if you will exhale into the Gaiwan, and smell again you will pick up the wonderful florals playing in the background.

Taste: Jin Guan Yin is simply a fantastic tea. Like the initial smell, it has a smooth, sweet, malty flavor with a bouquet of florals playing in the background (I detect rose, geranium, and honeysuckle). But that is not all. It then ends with an incredible Wi Yu minerality finish. In the aftertaste all of these flavors mix and play delightfully, making this an incredibly deep complex and delightful tea.

The tea is very forgiving and a good one to learn Gung Fu brewing. It has a very low astringency (just enough for a black tea but not so much to make it bitter or a challenge to brew). The mouth feel is creamy with a nice medium body.

I can see this as quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite black teas. If you are a fan of black tea it is well worth your try. If you are just starting out with higher grade teas, Jin Guan Yin is a great place to start.

As always, John has sourced us a fantastic high quality tea! Thanks brother!

Disclaimer: All the teas I review have either been purchased directly or received as a sample that King Tea includes with every customer purchase. I have not been paid nor have I ever received any perks/free tea for my reviews. I simply love tea and I know how much the advice and reviews that others have posted helped me in my journey. In a small way I simply want to pay that help forward to any reading one of my reviews. -Peace, Charlie
